la paz

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and is nestled right in the “hook” of the peninsula.  It’s exactly as you expect, a large city.  Meaning, it has all of the amenities that you need.  It’s also sprawling, the roads can be poor, but the activities are oftentimes worth it.

The Details
  1. La Paz is a wonderful city, although we need to stress that it’s a city. As in, sprawl. But iof you need it, La Paz will almost certainly have it.
  2. The Malecon is their beach front area and spans a long, long ways. Plenty of shops and restaurants. Too many to recommend, actually. But there is one we can definitely say to avoid … the rooftop at Hotel Seven Crown. Despite the semi-decent reviews online, we could not have had a worse experience. To the point that it was comical. Absolutely NOTHING went right. So no, we do not recommend … except for entertainment value of having an exceptionally horrible evening.
  3. We did go snorkeling with the whale sharks while we were there. They migrate and hang out right offshore and the experience was incredible. We didn’t have the clearest waters that day, but the whale sharks swim right underneath you from a distance of mere feet. We highly recommend!
  4. As with most cities in Baja, RV/Bus parking is free. Just park next to curbs that are either unpainted or white. Red, green, etc. are not to be used. We stayed for several days in a neighborhood and had zero problems.
  5. And just outside of La Paz is a restaurant that you must go to.  It’s called Birria Don Gaby and is basically a large tent down near the junkyards and industrial area.  Trust me, it’s well worth the trip.  Get the Chamorro (leg of pork).

On a Personal Note

A lot of people rave about La Paz. And we know of those who live there and call it home. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the city … but … we prefer the nature and the quiet. So yes, while we do come into the city (sadly, usually to the Walmart), our journeys usually take to places far less compacted.

Having said that, we LOVED Carnival and the whale sharks!  And the Birria.  OK, maybe La Paz is better than we think.  LOL!
