LOS BARRILES
Los Barriles is a very small, laid back village. Don’t expect too much in the way of shops, stores, etc. It’s truly sleepy. And perhaps that’s what it does best. It’s also very much an “expat town”, although during our short time here I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Maybe.
The roads are very narrow (see below) and most folks use quads and side-by-sides to get around. The beach is also a road (kinda) so you should be getting a feel for what transportation is really like here.
The Details
- Without a doubt … go to Taqueria Pelapapitas for food. It’s on the main drag and the food is incredible. Absolutely the best I’ve had in a very long time. And get the mango margarita as well. Or two. I truthfully would drive all the way back down Baja just to come back to this place.
- I learned the hard way … this town is not exactly “big rig” friendly. The streets are extremely narrow and cars/people are everywhere that you don’t want them to be. We had to make a few passes to find a place to stay and it was seriously unpleasant. The number of times I almost hit a person or had to back up on a dirt road was … we honestly should not have been there in the bus.
- If you want to street park, you can’t. There really isn’t anyplace to do that. We had hoped to boondock on the streets, but nope. it’s Just not possible. So we stayed at Martin Verdugo’s Beach Club. $700MX a night, but it’s on the beach and there is a pool.
- We rented our quad from a company called QuadGirl (https://quadgirlinc.com) and couldn’t be more happy. Very easy-going and despite the expense, they are the cheapest in town. We had a nearly new Honda and enjoyed the hell out of it.

On a Personal Note
I like this town, but at the same time I don’t. The expat feel is a little overpowering, to be honest. Most of the restaurants are simply “meh”, but the beach is wonderful and the people warm and friendly. if you’re looking to slow down and relax, this might be the place for you. But it’s also pretty far removed from other places.
