PLAYA EL TECOLOTE
Playa El Tecolote is an incredible beach destination, just a short drive from the capital of La Paz BCS. White sandy beaches, mountains, cacti … it’s an incredibly relaxing place to visit.
Sometimes. 😀
The Details
- The beach was devastated by Hurricane Norma in 2023 and still shows signs of the havoc. However, within months the locals restored the functionality of the restaurants and they are very much open for business. It might still not look like it in places, but honestly … I think it adds to the charm.
- When you drive in, there are a number of restaurants immediately in front of you. Two of our favorites are Toto Drinks (incredible appetizers, try the tuna!) and Club De Playa El Tecolote (get the stuffed chocolate clams).
- And off to your right are acres of free parking. Yep, you are allowed to stay there overnight for free, for pretty much as long as you want. Beware though, the “roads” are unimproved, sandy, and during the rare rain, very treacherous.
- We found this place when we came to an event called Escapar, where about a thousand vans, skoolies, and overlanders came together for a grand festival.
- It is extremely easy to get here. Just leave La Paz and follow the only real road north. It basically ends at Playa El Tecolote!
- And when you’re tired of eating, drinking, and sunbathing … go hiking. All of the dirt roads still leading north go to other wonderful beaches.

On a Personal Note
I absolutely love this place. Not because it’s posh and beautiful, but because it isn’t. Playa De Tecolote is exactly what it needs to be … peaceful.
I mentioned up top that sometimes it’s not so peaceful, and that’s during festivals and events. Put a few dozen to a few thousand people in one place and it will become noisy and boisterous. But the area is so large that it’s super-easy to just drift away to comewhere quieter. (Or just go join the fun!). We have been here in both wild times and in quiet, and have loved them both.
And we love the price as well! Granted, you get what you pay for. There are limited toilets, and they are only at the restaurants. Limited trash cans. And no other “mobile” services. But if you’re self-contained and ready for a new temporary home, this is it.
