San Carlos

San Carlos is a sleepy little town on the west coast of Baja.  It’s … to be honest, it’s not much of a destination.  Tourists don’t come here.  Expats don’t either.  In fact, most Mexican citizens stay away.  It’s a small town that has fallen on hard times and it shows.

But it does have one great thing going for it.  Whales.

The Details
  1. We stayed right at the entrance of town in a place called Hotel Mar y Arena, and it was a lovely stay. We paid 300 pesos per night for the bus, and the restaurant was wonderful.
  2. Unfortunately for us, the whales had left already. There are a small handful of tours in town that will take you out for a personal interaction with them, but the water was way too warm, way too early, and we missed the opportunity.
  3. We did “walk the town” and the best I can suggest is … don’t. And if you do, bring a stick for the street dogs. (This is from a local). While most street dogs in Baja are wonderful (and the three at our spot were super-friendly), there are small packs on the side streets of town that are semi-aggressive.
  4. There are a handful os SIX stores in town, a smaller number of restarants, and the Pemex only has petrol, no diesel.

On a Personal Note

This is a peaceful place, but not a destination.  We really wanted to see the whales, but it was simply not to be.  However, we will try again next year.
